Almolonga corte. (L108 x W228 cm) “By the mid-1960s the ikat styles had begun to predominate. The change from plain to such intricate skirts appeared to take place in an unusually short space of time. Patterns were conceived and executed with great technical skill.” (“Threads of Identity, Altman and West, pp. 121-2) This corte is a very fine example of the ikat style circa 1970 or earlier. It is composed of two cotton panels joined by hand embroidered seams so as to make a large tube. The ikat patterns are done in indigo. Cortes are manually woven on foot treadle looms, usually by men. This corte is in excellent condition. Collected from Ana Carolina Ajanel of Chichicastenango. (4-442) $ 75 *SOLD*
