Almolonga corte (wrap skirt). Weft 108 (2 panels) x warp 233 cm. This circa-1980 corte was hand woven on a foot treadle loom in two equal cotton
panels joined by hand embroidered decorative seams. It features weft stripes with extensive ikat dye patterns in indigo. “By the mid-1960s the
ikat styles had begun to predominate [in Almolonga]. The change from plain to such intricate skirts appeared to take place in an unusually short
space of time. Patterns were conceived and executed with great technical skill.” (“Threads of Identity, Altman and West, pp. 121-2) This corte is
in very good condition. It was acquired from Petronila Mendez Bocó at the Artesanos market in Antigua Guatemala. See Petronila’s picture in our
“Vendors” section. (11-172) $ 65. Sold.
