Huipil. Mixteca, Santiago Jamiltepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. This circa-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in three wide predominantly brown, warp-striped cotton base panels. This huipil is quite long. The brown thread in these panels is hand-spun, naturally brown cotton, called ixcaco in Guatemala or coyuchi locally in Oaxaca. These panels are decorated with heavy hand embroidery centered on the sunburst collar. This huipil was acquired from the Oaxaca Textile Museum where it had been part of their collection.
